Sear without Fear - Cooking Steaks Indoors

Wanting the perfectly cooked steak but needing to cook indoors? Cast iron is your friend! In the winter months, our cast iron is my go to for cooking steaks. It heats up evenly and helps the steaks sear perfectly.

The New York Strip Steak below was cooked inside on a cast iron "grill pan" that has ridges imitating a grill. I also have a standard cast iron pan that is frequently used as well, both pans work great! Looking for a cast iron, I highly suggest the Lodge brand as they are great quality and made in America.

Stove Top Searing

This method involves cooking your steak on your stove top and is perfect for your D&D Beef Steaks. Our premium steaks are cut 1 inch thick and don't take long to cook!

  1. Prepare the Beef - Pat your steaks dry and season lightly, salt and pepper is our preferred seasoning. Some will say you need to add oil to the pan or to lightly coat your steak, I have found that is not needed (and causes more smoke while cooking) when you have a properly seasoned cast iron.
  2. Preheat - Preheat your cast iron on medium heat.
  3. Sear - Place your steaks in the hot pan and let cook about 3-4 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. DO NOT FLIP YOUR STEAK MULTIPLE TIMES. Once you place the steak in the pan, put down the tongs folks. You want a great sear to form and if you continually move/flip your steak around it won't sear. Use an instant read thermometer to reach desired temperature.
  4. Rest - Once the steak has reached the desired doneness, let it rest for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Resting steak is when you transfer the cooked meat to a dish and loosely cover with foil. You want to let some of the heat out so it doesn't continue to cook  and let the juices redistribute throughout the meat.
